O'Connell St, Dublin..TODAY
[Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register]
Hundreds of republican demonstrators clashed with riot police in central Dublin today in a bid to block a parade by the Orange Order and victims of IRA violence. About a dozen fireworks, metal barricades, bottles and stones were thrown at Gardai as loyalist marchers gathered 100 yards away. Two gardaí sustained head injuries as fireworks exploded. Dozens of extra gardaí in full riot gear were called in to try to quell the disturbances. A line of about 40 riot police blocked the entrance to O'Connell Street as hundreds of youths pelted them with rocks, bottles and sticks. The officers slowly moved in to disperse the rioting crowds. Rubble and barricades from construction work on O'Connell Street were set on fire as riot police forced the crowd further into the city centre. Republican slogans were chanted and around 20 protesters attempted to hold a sit-down protest in the middle of the street. Gardaí quickly moved in and prevented the youths from blocking the road. At the front of the GPO, the headquarters of the 1916 Easter Rising, rioters charged police and fought hand-to-hand battles with around 100 officers. Mounted police were also drafted in to prevent more protesters joining. A stand-off ensued for several minutes as dozens of the demonstrators again attempted to hold a sit-down protest. All shops, in one of the city's busiest shopping districts, shut their doors for business. [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register] [Only Registered Users Can See Links. Re: O'Connell St, Dublin..TODAY
I'm not for one second going to condone what happened but whoever (Irish goverment?) gave the go-ahead needs their heads examined. Everyone knew this trouble was guaranteed to happen. Ireland, as a whole, may have made huge progress in the last few years, with the Anglo-Irish treaty, peace process, decomissioning etc etc but we are still light years away from being ready to have orangemen marching in Dublin past the the GPO on the 90th anniversary of the Easter Rising. Add in the 25th anniversary of the Hunger Strikes and this rally was always going to be trouble. As I said, all violence should be condemned but I can understand the annoyance of the protesters. I think I speak for the majority of non-republican Irishmen when I say that.

I was listening to one of the organisers of the "Love Ulster", (and who doesn't love Ulster, they are among the finest nine counties anywhere

And when called on this he made no apologies.

Re: O'Connell St, Dublin..TODAY
I thought the only "political" divide between Birmingham city and Villa was that Villa casuals have far-right links while the Birmingham Casuals are notable for being a racially diverse bunch ?
But seriously, not condoning the rioters but i cant believe they let the march take place, i can understand why folk were raging about it. They have no right to link the crimes of the IRA to the Irish state, which seems like what they were implying. Maybe it was a crafty piece of politics from Michael MacDowell and the Irish government who agreed to the march precisely as they knew there was gonna be mass paggers, and that would potentially discredit Sinn Fein and republicanism in general among voters in the south. Wouldnae be surprised like...

Having a parade like that in Dublin is asking for trouble.

Re: O'Connell St, Dublin..TODAY
I was down on O'Connell St at about 3.30pm on Saturday afternoon just after things had quietened down.
It look like a bomb had hit the place. loads of paving stones were missing from the pavements(the building materials left lying around giving the rioters weapons didn't help) windows in numerous shops had been smashed and some looted, O'Connell Bridge was covered in broken glass as was a good bit of Westmoreland St. There were more gardai on the go than at an Old Firm game and traffic was at a standstill due to the city centre being "shut" I agree that whoever agreed to let the march go ahead must be wrong in the head. It also gave every knacker & skanger in Dublin a chance to have a pop at the gardai, using the protest against the march as a smokescreen.
