the football factory

did anybody see this film?

it seems to have attracted some hysterical reviews - this for example:

I find it quite interesting that this same site gave kill bill 5 stars, a film which regular viewers will remember I criticised for fetishing violence.

Why is it then that a film featuring punch ups provokes such a visceral response where a mysogynistic amoral feast of torture and mutilation is deemed hip? odd in my book. I also suspect it wouldn't have garnered the same reaction if it was set in south central LA.

anybody care to comment on this juxtaposition or the film in general. regarding the latter I thought it was full of cheesy dialogue, didn't capture the ferocity of the real thing, but to be fair is probably as close as you could get - a punch, perversely, being harder to render realistically on film than a nuclear strike. too much henri lloyd n all.

best thing about it was the soundtrack - particularly inspired choices being the scream's miss lucifer soundtracking the mob up at the end (though they could have done with deploying the frankly demonic extended instrumental version) and the libertine's what a waster accompanying a mass charlie tooting sesh on the bus.

PS - I stress, I'm not saying that the events that the film depicts is to be lauded, but as far as I could see it just depicts what happens, why people get so upset because of a lack of 'rationalising' beats me.

yeah me and Nikki went to see it the day it opened ... I thought it was fantastic, a very good real to life reflexion of the "casual" scene down south ... it doesn't actually glorify hooliganism but it leaves you to make up your own mind.

it isnt all about fighting but the true meaning of friendship and looking out for one and other... it also has some hillarious scenes which are ment to be funny

an excellent film by all accounts

Re: the football factory

I seen it on hooky DVD just before it came out. Bore no relation to the book and you could tell the 'actors' from the 'extras' clothing wise.

Quite enjoyed it.

indeed.

and would chels really allow tracky wearing 'chavs' to tag along?

and, to be tewwibly pedantic, given the story was moved from the books different timeframe to here and now 2004, would chelsea v spurs really go down the same way?

Always been interested in the origins of that word 'chav', egb.

Down here it's widely used locally in nearby Newark-upon-Trent in Nottinghamshire, a town that has always been noted for it's *ahem* to borrow from another thread, travelling people. That being largely, reputedly because of it's proximity to the main A1 road.

A standard greeting in Newark might be 'How yer kitchin chav' (chavvy)? But never in Nottingham itself. I'm taking it that the word is of Romany origin?

As for the film itself, how authentic is it really? Does it relay the culture of that time in a truthful manner?

" I seen it on hooky DVD just before it came out "

I read that the hooky DVDs were markedly different from the final film. Evidently the director did a complete recut of the film after the fakes were in circulation.

Re: the football factory

I think the reviewer may have been one of those people who needs a director to tell him/her what to think a la Oliver Stone or the cheesy moment at the end of Saving Private Ryan etc etc.

Does this thinking mean that all the WWII docos on The History Channel will have to be sure to say 'bad guy' when Hitler is mentioned and and 'good guy' when Churchhill is shown. Absolute crap.

Besides, I've scanned his/her review and it reads like amateur nonsense - whoever asked for a social statement instead of a review from a film writer.

In general I object to being told what to watch on moral grounds (I would say f*** you Daily Mail if their condemnation wasn't a handy sure sign of a good film!) and will be ignoring this writer.

Chav(vy) is indeed a romany word, and is widely used right down the East coast of the British Isles. Mention is made of it in Peter Kerr's Thistle Soup about East Lothian and I stumbled on this site just now Gaj.....

Re: the football factory

While it was an enjoyable enough film in itself, it wasn't as good as it could have been, the moving of the time frame from the book to the film was a major disapointment for me. To capture the spirit and mood of the time / scene it should have accurately reflected the styles and music of that time, I can't think of any reason it could not have been done either.

With a bit of effort the film could have been a cultural marker for the time but for me didn't really cut it compared to the book (did the book not have a significantly different ending ?).

6/10

Like a few other words that have travelled the Eastern areas of the country. One that might be cited is 'radge', which I have heard in Nottingham as 'he's geting a bit radgy', (disagreeable and bed-tempered). Slightly archaic here these days though.

In my memory of playing against a lot of lads in football leagues out in the Newark district, Chav or Chavvy was usually used in a matey way rather than the seemingly more widely used derogative manner

Chav(vey) remains a term of endearment to older scottish east coasters to this day.

I'm no that old(!) and me and my mates have always used it as a term of endearment, though when I used it above on this thread I have to say I meant it in the way it seems to have become used recently ie a synonym for ned or schemey.

Green Street was a pile of crap. So hard to take serious when you have that wee elf guy in it. Football Factory was a bit better, but dosen't really reflect the casual seen either. Like another poster said...Would Chelsea honestly let 2 of there firm where trackies with stone island and hacket tops. I dont think so.
