I read a book last year by Mary Berg who escaped the WW2 Polish ghettoes by another route.
An optimism of the spirit survives throughout her book. I was particularly moved by the community beimg able to create educational establishments with little or no external resources. Despite the horrific conditions, there appeared to be a real thirst for learning and understanding that transcended the brutality and starvation around them.
