Rab, I'm sure you'll have a great time.
It's not as bad as some people make out and to be fair it's 100 times better than Torremolinos (although the borderline between the two is a bit hazy)... like Portobello and Joppa I suppose (but with sunshine).
I had a ring stolen while I was there a few years ago (almost certainly by the maid that cleaned my room) and spent a whole day in the Torremolinos police station filling out forms. Nothing was ever proven so it was a waste of a day of my holiday.
People die regularly crossing the road in front of the beach (a father and son died the day we arrived... had just went for a walk while the mother unpacked in their room.. not a good start to your holiday).
There was a lot of building work going on while we were there and literally there were timeshare touts on every corner.. It got so bad that I bought one of those t-shirts that goes on about not wanting to go to see timeshares and telling them to F**k off... they used it as a challenge and as an opening gambit... was VERY close to decking a couple of them cos they were so in yer face!
I believe that situation is much better now though.
Seriously, have a great time and dont overindulge on the San Miguels!
