The gadget show on channel 5 ([Only Registered Users Can See Links. Click Here To Register])has been running a campaign to stop the ISP from using the term 'upto' as this gives a false impression,

But if you are lucky enough to be able to get virgin, you have a better chance off getting the closest speed due to them having there own fibre optic network, the problem with BT and the piggy back networks is that BT OPENREACH have only got fibreoptic up to the exchange, from the exchenge to the street boxes and into you own home is still copper, so the further away from the exchange the less your speed,

The reason for this is the loss and gain on the copper line, the longer the cable, the more you lose, and the worse your bandwidth, due to amount off users on the copper
