For some reason that escapes me completely, socialism still has an cultural and intellectual appeal that belies its place in history, ie the dustbin. I too have marvelled at the appeal of these coffee-table Das Kapitals, seemingly bought by the sort of socialist who makes more money than most of us.
There is also a curious kind of intellectual elitism intimately connected with socialism, and to my mind it fits well with the middle class marxist, which explains that only 'education' is required to allow the ignorant person to see the light. Nothing to do with a century of repression, subjugation, famine, civil war, mass imprisonment and human suffering on a previously unknown scale then.
