That's actually PS, which is the German (metric) equivilant of BHP. It is commonly atributed that:
1 hp = 33,000 ft·lbf·min?1 = exactly 745.69987158227022 W (note the lb/ft)
1 ps = 75 kp·m/s = 735.49875 W = 0.9863201652997627 hp (note the kp/ms)
Hence 1 PS is smaller than 1HP, and there for it is determined that the Bugatti only has c.996BHP, which occurs at the flywheel, therefore, through the complexity of its 4 wheel drive system the actual power at the wheels is less still, at c.960BHP.
The true marvel of the Bugatti is the gearbox - weighting just over 1kg, and yet still being capable of harnessing that amount of power is a work of not just engineering genius, but miraculous.
