Derek was 28 and an ex sailor. He survived the Falklands in 82. He left the Navy shortly after his 3rd tour in the South Atlantic.
After he was discharged he took a job as a storeman in LRT at the Marine garage and married Eleanor a smashing girl from Stewarton in Ayrshire . upon them moving to Edinburgh they bought a flat within walking distance of Easter Road where he became a sesaon ticket holder.
Derek was an active member of the Stanton branch of the Hibs supporters club, on 19th April 1991 he and some mates were playing 5's at the then Pitz stadium in Porotbello. It was a warm up for an inter branch tournament that was in memory for a fan who had died tragically young. Whilst playing in goal Derek collapsed without warning, on arrival the ambulance crews managed to restart Dereks heart, but his brain had been deprived of oxygen for too long, his life support system was switched of on 22nd April.

Derek's been gone 13 years now. He was my only baby brother to follow me into the navy and that made me very proud of him. Not a day goes by without me thinking of him. Everyone who knew him agreed he was just a nice guy. The world is poorer without him.
