The Hibees today announced that goalkeeper Graeme Smith has agreed to join the Club following his release from Coca Cola league one team Brighton & Hove Albion.

The keeper joined Albion from Motherwell, under the Bosman ruling last summer, but he has slipped down the pecking order in recent weeks, following the arrival of Peter Brezovan.

The keeper, born in Roslin, who Brighton & Hove albion snapped up from Motherwell in the summer, conceded 28 goals in eight starts plus two substitute appearances.

Smith was in Edinburgh on New Year’s Eve and passed a medical at Easter Road before agreeing personal terms with Hibs.

Speaking to the Official Hibs Website, Smith said: “I am delighted to be joining Hibernian. Everything about the Club is exciting at the moment, from the Gaffer, the training facilities to the results and team on the park. I want to be part of it, and will be working as hard as I can to get into the team on a regular basis.”

John Hughes said: “Graeme is an experienced SPL keeper and provides us with another excellent option in goal. I want competition for all positions at this Club and Graeme has the right character and skills to play a key part in helping us build success for Hibernian.”

Defender Andy Webster rescued a point for Dundee United in an entertaining draw with Hibs at Easter Road.

Merouane Zemmama fired the Hibees into a deserved lead when he stepped away from Webster before arrowing a superb left foot shot in off the bar.

A rejuvenated United fought back after the break and levelled in 72 minutes through Webster’s deflected effort.

United had Prince Buaben sent off after clashing with Anthony Stokes as Hibs moved a point clear in second place.

St Johnstone came from behind to knock Hibernian out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup at the third round stage.

Hibs took the lead within the first minute when Anthony Stokes swept a rebound shot past keeper Alan Main.

But Gavin Swankie’s drive quickly levelled matters before Derek Riordan missed a penalty for the home side.

Substitute Christopher Millar put Saints ahead in the 76th minute and Jody Morris’ half-volley made sure of victory nine minutes from the end.

Anthony Stokes claimed his first goals for Hibs as luckless St Johnstone crashed to defeat at Easter Road.

The visitors started brightly but fell behind when Stokes turned and drilled home a shot from the edge of the penalty area on 21 minutes.

Deek added a second with a similar finish 15 minutes later.

Saints continued to make chances but midway through the second half Stokes found the net again when his deflected free kick deceived keeper Alan Main.

Hibs finished the match showboating, with an array of tricks and twists, but the scoreline rather flattered the home side, who were jittery in defence throughout.

The Hibees travelled along the M8 to take on Celtic. Second half goals from Ivan Sproule and Scott Brown gave Hibernian their first win at Celtic Park for 13 years, throwing the title race wide open. Garry O’Connor opened the scoring after six minutes, sending a low shot past David Marshall from eight yards. Although Celtic Substitute Craig Beattie volleyed in the equaliser after 59 minutes. Substitute and popular Ivan Sproule fired Hibs ahead in the 79th minute before Scott Brown chipped Marshall for the third two minutes later.

“This has to go down as one of my favourites, actually beating Celtic at Celtic Park when them and Rangers were locked together going for the title, was something I didn’t expect, with 10 minutes left we were 3-1 up and I was just glad we were getting at least a draw!”

“The other one would be when we beat dunfermline 4-1 at east end park. We were one down at half time, but Steven Fletcher and Jamie Mckluskey came on and turned the game around, fletch got two and so did deeks. The weather was absolutely brilliant, the away end was packed and Hibs won. AND I got a bridey!

Hibs took a big step towards confirming a third-place finish as they came from behind to beat Hearts at Tynecastle for the first time in over five years. Hearts dominated the first half and a mistake by Hibs keeper Simon Brown let Lee Miller head in the opening goal. But Hibs lifted their performance after the break and equalised through Garry O’Connor’s 12-yard effort. Dean Shiels got the winner, firing in the rebound after Amadou Konte’s header had hit the post.

“My favourite away game has to be Tynie – beating that lot tastes a whole lot sweeter when you’re in their backyard.”

“More so when you consider the less than auspicious start when an on loan Lee Miller got an innocuous looking header past the near post of our goalkeeper who wanted to shepherd it out of play.”

“How many of us thought, ‘here we go again’? How many of us thought, ‘they’re there for the taking’!”

“So out we came for the second half and from memory, Riordan nicked the ball off the big lesbian to score, only for the referee to rule out what would have been a brilliant derby goal to be talked about for years.”

“O’Connor equalised and then we battered them looking for the winner with their goal remaining intact for some time… then with about fifteen minutes to go, a ball flighted in to Konté (who should have buried it) rebounded off the post following a weak header and fell kindly to Shiels who volleyed it into the roof of the net.”

“The Roseburn erupted, my mate launched himself into a sea of bodies and I grabbed the nearest body to me for a celebratory cuddle… and it’s for those reason that you should always go to Tynie.”

Tony Mowbray returned to Easter Road this time with Celtic to take on the might of the Hibees.

A Georgios Samaras header put Celtic ahead four minutes from half-time after Andreas Hinkel had crossed in.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men when McGeady was shown a second yellow after a Paul Hanlon challenge for diving.

Boruc kept Celtic in the match by saving Hanlon’s rocketing 25-yard shot and Hibs goalkeeper Graham Stack kept out a late Samaras solo effort.

“The 4-3-3 lacked width, which didn’t suit our attacking side as Falkirk were tight through the middle, and we had to play through them in effectiveness. Should the two full backs be more offensive, only then will the 4-3-3 be effective.”

“Still, with three more points in the table after a poor showing, then we should take encouragement from that alone.”

“No surprises in the starting 11 aside from the inclusion of Stokes, whom I assumed wouldn’t even make the bench. But if Yogi thinks he’s fit enough to start then that’s good enough for me. Bamba seems to be making the CB position his own, aside from a few shaky moments where we could have been sent off, he was MOTM.”

“First half performance was pretty ropey, a lot of high balls and not much coherent passing as we’d expect. Shots from Stokes and a couple of promising attacks were a few highlights. Disappointing goal to lose, but not much Ma-Kalamby could have done as DVZ was skinned a beast and had no-one covering him. Shot was right in the bottom corner. Equaliser came from an unexpected source, but a welcome one none the less. As others have pointed out, our set pieces were painfully predictable the last few seasons with Jones in the starting 11, so to see someone else scoring from the corner was quite pleasing. Thought the referee was quite pedantic booking Bamba for leaving the field of play, not as if he was commiting some sort of heinous crime, merely celebrating a goal with his manager.”
